Say Nice Things About Detroit®
It was about 45+ years ago that Emily T Gail opened Emily's Across the Street. It was located across the street from her first store which was a 108 sq ft. space in the then iconic Penobscot Bldg. down the hall from the Caucus Club.
Emily's Across the Street at the corner of Congress and Shelby next to London Chop House in what had been one of the major brokerage businesses that moved from the area we called the Financial District to Renaissance Center when it opened in 1976 and left a lot of empty street level spaces. Emily's Across the Street is where we created the Emily Detroit Run, the first run through the streets of Detroit. It's where we created many events including Bike Days. It was the heartbeat of our "say nice things about Detroit" message and movement..We pioneered the Detroit logo on everything era. Might say we were the original local culture shop and authentic Detroit apparel long before others.
We lost our lease in a court fight after creating such a busy corner ... everyone including McDonald's wanted our corner. That was back in the 80's. However, 3 generations later the message behind 'Say nice things about Detroit" is in the hearts of people all over the county. I am grateful to Ink Detroit for creating the "Say nice things about Detroit" Collection Line as well as many other Detroit themed apparel so people all over the country can wear their Detroit love proudly wherever we live, work and play. What is heartwarming and fun for me is that all the wonderful creative Detroit products that have been created over the years all say in some way "say nice things about Detroit.
