The Detroit City Flag has two Latin phrases with uncanny relevance today: "Speramus Meliora" and "Resurget Cineribus", meaning "We hope for better things" and "It will rise from the ashes" respectively. Detroit literally rose from the ashes after the fire of 1805 and we've done it again figuratively in the 21st century. Not only are we hoping for better things, we are making them happen. The message in Detroit's flag - designed in 1907 (officially adopted in 1948) - has more meaning today than ever.
