What Is the Eastern Market In Detroit?
The Eastern Market in Detroit is the country's largest outdoor farmer's market and a go-to destination for tourists and locals alike. Located in the heart of Detroit at 2934 Russell Street, it's the home to countless vendors offering local food, drinks, and products.
The market spans some 43 acres. It was founded in 1841 at its original location and moved to the present spot 50 years later, in 1891. Check out a 360-degree virtual tour of the area here.
The market hosts various festivals and events throughout the year. Popular events include Sunday Market and the upcoming Flower Day.
The History of the Eastern Market in Detroit
The Eastern Market District in Detroit stretches back to the 1800s. It was originally located in Cadillac Square and was strictly a hay and wood sales shed. However, in 1891, sales sheds were added to provide space for the growing list of vendors at the market. The district was then renamed and moved to its current location. More sheds were added in 1922 and 1929.
But, like for much of the nation, it wasn't until after World War II that the Eastern Market became a popular spot for wholesale food and products. More food processors and wholesalers moved into the Detroit area. At the belly of the Eastern Market, a six-block public market was established.
Today, as you walk through the Eastern Market, you'll see countless brick storefronts, up to three stories tall, featuring Victorian architecture and over 150 different food and wholesaler vendors selling their goods. The Eastern Market is the largest open-air flowerbed market in the United States. It is within the country's most significant historic public market district. In 1978, it was also added to the National Registry of Historic Places.
The Eastern Market Partnership has also built an infrastructure surrounding the market to further support the city of Detroit's cultural, economic, and nutritional enrichment.
